Reliable P2P Content Delivery for Alternative Business Models_v6a_CameraReady

چکیده
The production, distribution and consumption of information goods have evolved through continuous disruptions, such as the invention of the printing press. Presently, these activities are being disrupted by the Internet and digital technology revolutions, which are triggering a paradigm change in this field. P2P content delivery is included in the disrupting factors. It has endured an explosive development in the non-commercial sector. Commercial content delivering entities reacted slowly to these changes, but have also begun to employ P2P technology. This employment, however, has been hesitant and its results unremarkable. Also, commercial initiatives which employ this technology have frequently been economically unsuccessful. In this paper, we argue that these two realities are interconnected. We present and analyze the current P2P content delivery scenario (commercial and otherwise). Based on previously developed work, we expose the cause, of P2P’s lack of success in the commercial sector, as techno-economical, rather than just technical, as it is intimately connected to the enforced business models. Finally we present our solution for a reliable commercial P2P content delivery, and embody it in the definition of an exemplifying P2P system (under implementation), that provides the necessary support for business models, adequate for on-line operation.

On peer-to-peer (P2P) content delivery
In both academia and industry, peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have attracted great attentions. P2P applications such as Napster, Gnutella, FastTrack, BitTorrent, Skype and PPLive, have witnessed tremendous success among the end users. Unlike a client-server based system, peers bring with them serving capacity. Therefore, as the demand of a P2P system grows, the capacity of the network grows, t...
متن کاملService Distribution in IP Networks - A Business Model Analysis
In this paper we analyze different business models for the distribution of content and services over IP networks and outline their distinct characteristics and value propositions. Four business models are distinguished: Centralized Internet Hosting, Direct Homing, Content Delivery Networks and P2P Distribution. In contrast to prior research, we focus on the ability of present technology to supp...
متن کاملA Massively Scalable Persistent Content Distribution System
This paper proposes a novel form of peercasting system as an improved solution for IP-based mass media content delivery. Several approaches are discussed, some of which are already widely deployed, or undergoing such deployment, as homogeneous systems. In particular, IP multicast and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay network techniques are described in isolation as they form the bedrock of the new pee...
متن کاملA Reliable Content-Based Routing Protocol over Structured Peer-to-Peer Networks
Much work has been done on building content-based publish/subscribe systems over structured P2P networks, so that the two technologies can be combined together to better support large-scale and highly dynamic systems. However, existing content-based routing protocols can only provide weak reliability guarantee over structured P2P networks. We designed a new type of content-based routing protoco...
متن کاملPlanetP: Using Gossiping and Random Replication to Support Reliable Peer-to-Peer Content Search and Retrieval
We introduce the PlanetP system, which explores the construction of a reliable peer-to-peer (P2P) content search and retrieval service using randomly circulated global state between peers of an unstructured community. Our work represents a novel alternative approach to recent P2P systems that focus on enabling very largescale name-based object location using sophisticated distributed data struc...
